The first ever Betty Mitchell Awards started with host, Lindsey Burns, welcoming everyone to her gown. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the awards ceremony that celebrates excellence in Calgary theatre and the gown still promises to be front and centre.
For an industry that makes its living getting dressed up, fashion is very important. Last year’s Best Actress in a Drama winner and this year’s Best Ensemble nominee, Allie Lynch says “Give me gowns. Give me big-ass jewels. Give me heels I can barely walk in and 6 hours to get ready. And there’s my Bettys’ fashion in a nutshell.”
One of this year’s Best Actress in a Drama nominees, Arielle Rombough, settled on her dress as soon as the nominations were announced. She believes, "Theatre is a space to explore the aspects of humanity that make us unique so I like to dress up for the Bettys to express my individuality. Theatre is inherently transformative and it's fun to pay tribute to that and our unusual job requirement of wearing costumes for a living. This year I chose a bright textured chartreuse dress with an asymmetric scalloped hem that my friend Eva is altering and customizing just for my body. I like to choose outfits that stand out and have a perfect fit. I can't wait to wear it!"
The 2017 Bettys celebration should prove to be a night to remember for many reasons. Congratulations to all the nominees and fashionistas who will grace the 20th anniversary red carpet on August 21st at Vertigo Theatre. #bettys2017
