Updated: Jul 7

Betty Mitchell Awards

Message from the Board

It has been almost two weeks since the Betty's wrapped up!

For 25 years, The Betty Mitchell Awards have brought together Calgary’s professional theatre community to celebrate and honour the amazing work being done in our city. Last week, we saw firsthand how immensely encouraging and enthusiastic this community is; showcasing just how loving, supportive, and caring everyone is to one another.

The Betty’s Board would like to offer our sincerest thanks and deep appreciation to everyone who attended, volunteered, and helped make this year’s awards show so special. Additionally, we extend a special thank you to all the artists, arts facilitators, and arts champions who continue to create outstanding theatre in our city. Bravo!

As the 2023/2024 season has come to a close, we look forward to next year’s season. We promise to take what we learned this year and carry it forward to make the 26th Anniversary as special, accommodating, and fun as possible!

Lastly, before we arrive at the list of this year's winners, we want to encourage anyone with an interest in helping out to contact us at info@bettymitchellawards.com. We are looking for new Board Members, Nomination Committee members, and volunteers for the night of the performance.

If you like what we do, join us; if you hate what we do, join us; and if you think you can do it better, absolutely join us!

And now...the winners of the 2023-2024 season!

From the Betty's Community

Our community is an amazing resource for support and encouragement. In the vast sea of social media, some of the most heartfelt and lovely accolades may go unseen or may be seen by many but just are so nice to see. We wanted to highlight some of the many, many heartfelt messages left from our community to our winners. Thank you to everyone!

Juried Award Recipients

"Congratulations to the recipients of the Duval Lang award at the 25th annual Betty Mitchell awards! This award is to honour those who have an outstanding contribution or significant achievement in the field of Theatre for Young Audiences in Calgary.

Karen Youngberg & Jamie Dunsdon are two incredible humans who are inspiring young people every day with their work in the community. The ripple effect of their tenacity and the brilliance they have created is something that will be remembered for years to come!" - Quest Theatre

This annual award has been created to honor an individual or group of individuals who have made an outstanding contribution or significant achievement in the field of Theatre for Young Audiences in Calgary. This award is made possible through a partnership between Quest Theatre and the Betty Mitchell Awards and is supported by a fund established in 2008 at the Calgary Foundation by a group of generous donors in recognition of Duval Lang.

"Brennan’s career in Theatre started when he was in Kindergarten as a Foley Artist for the class

play of the Three Little Pigs. It was in High School that Brennan reconnected to Theatre,

learning that wearing black and hanging out in the wings was well suited to him.

Brennan went on to take Theatre and Entertainment Production at Red Deer College and was

then accepted into the Banff Centre for the Arts as a Stagecraft Student and spent a year in

Banff as a Work Study. Alberta Theatre Projects, Jack Singer Concert Hall and a variety of other

Theatre Companies have had the pleasure of having Brennan as a technician.

His passion for the “Magic of Theatre” is inspiring. He makes others want to be and do better.

From Broadway Across Canada, Alberta Ballet, Calgary Opera and numerous other shows,

Brennan welcomes performers and crew to the Jubilee and helps them be the best they can be.

Brennan is a gifted technician, mentor and agent for the Technical Arts. It is my privilege to put Brennan

forward for the Dean Ott/Debbie Boult Award." - Karen Younberg, Associate Director of Education at Arts Commons
