Update from the Betty Mitchell Award’s Board of Directors In Response to COVID-19

Each and every year, The Betty Mitchell Awards honour the incredible theatrical works that appear on stages across Calgary. In light of health and safety restrictions put forward by Alberta Health Services (AHS) and the Government of Alberta in response to COVID-19, as well the impact of COVID-19 on the Calgary arts community, it is with a heavy heart that we have made the decision to not hold the Betty Mitchell Awards in its usual capacity this June. While we would love nothing more than for everyone to come together and celebrate, it is simply not possible or appropriate at this time.

We want to assure you that we still intend to recognize the productions in the 2019/2020 season, including the shows that were cancelled or postponed. What that looks like we are still not entirely sure. We will be working with our supporters, as well as members of the community to establish how we can appropriately look back on all the hard work done by Calgary theatres, actors, technicians, designers and more. Ultimately, we want to create something that everyone can be a part of and truly be proud of.

In the meantime, we encourage you to support each other during this unprecedented time. Whether you’re sharing online initiatives or making donations, every little bit helps the theatre community. We thank you for your patience while we continue to determine our next steps and move forward

Thank you,

The Betty Mitchell Awards Board
